The Vermont Farmhouse Jr Dollhouse Week 5

Floors

The kit instructions offer suggestions for finishing the floors, which you can follow if you prefer. However, I chose to finish mine in a more traditional and simpler way. These floors are specifically designed for finishing, so you won’t encounter issues with mismatched wood grains or colors that could affect your stain. Your floors will take the stain true to its intended hue.

Today, I started on the first and second floors. I began by lightly sanding them with fine grit sandpaper. Avoid using coarse grit, as the flooring is delicate and can be damaged by rough sanding. Light sanding removes any glue that may have gotten on the floors during assembly and prepares them for staining.

Next, I applied a faux stain mixture using Americana Cocoa Acrylic Paint and Delta Ceramcoat Interior Gloss Varnish. This combination produced a very light stain, which was my goal. You can adjust the ratio of paint to varnish based on how much color you want; I used just a small amount of paint to achieve a very light stain. After staining, I lightly sanded the floors again and applied two more coats of gloss varnish, sanding and allowing it to dry between each coat. This process results in a smooth and shiny finish for the floors.
