The Storybook Cottage Dollhouse Day 9

I installed the front roof finial, but I can't do the side finials until the back shingles are finished. I also glued on the roof trim. I filled the flower box with silk mini flowers that I bought in assorted colors. I separated out the pink ones that matched the dollhouse better. To create a base, I filled the bottom of the window box with cotton balls and arranged the flower stems around them. After placing enough flowers around the edges and between the cotton balls, I filled in the middle. The cotton holds the flowers in place but allows for easy removal if I want to redecorate later.

I started putting in the floors. These floors had already been primed, but I added another coat of white paint because any other color would show through the tile sheets. Since this dollhouse is small, I won't need to join any flooring pieces, which is a big advantage because these tile sheets don’t fit together neatly, and patching them should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Creating a template for the floor took a lot of adjustments. I had to reposition the paper several times to get all the corners and edges right.

Once the template was perfect, I cut it out from the tile sheet. You might think this would transfer perfectly, but it didn't. I still needed to adjust the tile sheet itself to fit properly around all the details. In the end, I had a piece of tile that fit snugly over the floor, greatly improving the appearance of the dollhouse. I used the same process for the attic floor, which was much easier. I applied tacky glue to attach the tile sheet to the floors; this material won’t curl or lift, so there’s no need for weights while gluing. It's important not to use hot melt glue on these sheets since they are thin and can melt.

Now I'm ready to shingle the back roof. I made another template and then hot glued the shingles to it, measuring with a ruler before staining it. After it dried, I glued it to the dollhouse and added the side finials.
