This is a half-scale, laser-cut Buttercup Cottage Dollhouse decorated for the holidays. I assembled the dollhouse following the instructions, using the same method as the one-inch scale version. I documented that assembly on my blog.
I completed the entire dollhouse without removing the windows from the frames and doors. Next, I applied a mixture of spackle and acrylic paint to create a "stucco" finish on both the inside and outside, aiming for a texture similar to gingerbread cookies.
For the "icing," I used fabric lace trim, which I painted with acrylic paint. When painted, the lace resembles icing quite well. I chose various textures and widths, applying them with hot glue in all the spots where icing would typically go on a real gingerbread house.
I decorated the dollhouse with foam holiday items, stickers and tiny pompoms to represent "candy." Craft stores often sell assorted bags of these decorations during the holiday season. You can personalize your dollhouse however you like and find inspiration by searching for gingerbread house photos online. I also decorated the dollhouse's "yard" with these items.
I added a half-scale dining room furniture kit to the dollhouse, which I assembled and finished with stucco in the same manner as the main structure. I embellished this furniture with foam decorations as well and thin candy cane fabric trim.
Finally, I placed the dollhouse on a cake stand with a doily for added realism. For chimney smoke, I used cotton painted pink like cotton candy, and for powdered sugar on the roof, I sprinkled baby powder. Now you have a gingerbread house that will last for many Christmases without being eaten!
