Now that the mansard roof panels are installed, they need to be painted dark because I will be staining the shingles gray. I want to avoid white poster board showing between the shingles, so a dark paint will help prevent this. Although black poster board is available, it’s not ideal because you have to wallpaper the interior side, making a dark color less practical. It’s better to use white poster board and then paint the exterior to match the shingle color. If the corners lift or have gaps, you can use masking tape to secure them. Just remember to paint over the masking tape when you're finished.
Now is also a good time to complete the right side bay wall roof. I textured it to match the porch roof and used masking tape to protect the vergeboard from the texture. Once the texture dried, I removed the masking tape. I also found and installed the missing trim for the front and side doors.
