INSTALLATION OF MANSARD ROOF PANELS
It is time to install the mansard roof panels and since I am not going to strain and possibly throw out my back trying, I have transferred these wooden panels onto poster board instead.
You just trace the panels onto poster board and cut the poster board out to create a template of the panel.
Using poster board rather than the wooden panels will allow you to achieve the very steep slope of this mansard roof, without much of a struggle. poster board is fine to use for this application because these mansard roof panels are not carrying any structural component of the dollhouse.
The most important thing you have to do, when you do this, is wallpaper your mansard panels before installation. Because you will be applying wallpaper to poster board, which is also paper, you do not want to use wallpaper paste or any wet glue. Instead, use a good quality, permanent glue stick. The glue stick will not overly wet the paper, preventing wrinkling and warping. The result is a smooth finish.
The front mansard panel has to be divided in two sections because it will fall in two different rooms. Make sure that you use the right wallpaper print for each room.
When you get ready to glue on your mansard panels, apply glue to the top edge only. This is the edge that will go against the inside of the vergeboard. nothing else needs glue.
The easiest way to apply mansard panels is to take your panel and place the top edge inside of the top vergeboard and the bottom edge against the bottom vergeboard. The curve of the mansard panel should be bulging outwards during this process. Once both edges are in place, push the curve inward and the mansard panel will bend right into place with the curve inwards. The panel will be held in place by the two vergeboards.
Make sure that the top edge is glue tightly against the inside of the top vergeboard. Use binder clamps through the window openings and at the top of the vergeboard to ensure this. Since it is poster board that is being glued to wood, it should dry quickly in place. I applied trim along this top edge, after the panel was dry. It gives the top of the wallpaper a more finished look.
You can use masking tape to hold the corners of the mansard roof together, if there are any gaps. Shingles will ultimately hide this masking tape from view.
