The Lily Dollhouse Revisited Week 24

Installation of Mansard Roof Panels

It's time to install the mansard roof panels. To avoid straining my back, I've transferred the designs onto poster board. Start by tracing the panels onto the poster board and cutting them out to create templates. Using poster board makes it easier to achieve the steep slope of the mansard roof since these panels do not bear any structural weight in the dollhouse.

Before installing the mansard panels, it's essential to wallpaper the sides facing the attic. Since you'll be applying wallpaper to poster board, avoid using wallpaper paste or wet glue, as these can cause wrinkling. Instead, use a high-quality permanent glue stick for a smooth finish. The front mansard panel needs to be divided into two sections for two different rooms, so choose the appropriate wallpaper for each.

When you're ready to attach the mansard panels, apply glue only to the top edge, which will fit against the inside of the vergeboard. No other areas need glue. To install the panels, place the top edge inside the top vergeboard and the bottom edge against the bottom vergeboard. The curve of the mansard panel should bulge outward. Once both edges are positioned, gently push the curve inward; this will help the panel fit snugly into place between the vergeboards. Ensure that the top edge is glued securely against the inside of the top vergeboard. Use binder clamps through the window openings and at the top of the vergeboard to hold it in place while it dries. Since you're gluing poster board to wood, it should dry quickly.

After it dries, you can add trim along the top edge for a polished look. If there are gaps at the corners of the mansard roof, you can use masking tape to hold them together temporarily. The shingles will eventually cover this tape, making it invisible.
