I used turret pieces as templates to create them from black poster board, which I later discarded. Flexible poster board allows for a better mansard curve than wood would provide. Additionally, my planned finish for the roof requires a precise fit since I won't be using shingles. I need the corner edges to fit tightly together for a clean appearance, which wood wouldn't achieve.
It took considerable dry fitting, cutting, and adjusting to ensure the roof panels fit perfectly against each other. Poster board is easy to sand down, which helps make the corner edges flush. I then applied a bit of spackle along the edges. For gluing the panels, hot melt glue works best because it allows them to lay down tightly and create the curve. Since the panels are not structural, hot melt glue is sufficient.
I used jewelry beads for the top finial. The underside of the turret serves as the ceiling for the hidden tower room, so I painted it and added ceiling paper in that area. The slots are unnecessary since they will be hidden under the paper. The turret can be placed on top of the tower without needing tabs or slots.
