The Fairfield Dollhouse Revisited Week 28

Installing the roof was a challenging task that took several days. The assembly of these dollhouses does not account for finishes, so any added details can affect how well the pieces fit together. I added siding, shingles, and trim to the exterior tower walls, which impacted the fit of the roof panels.

To ensure a proper fit, I had to sand down the edges of the panels that met the tower and use a mallet to secure the roof in place. This process also resulted in some damage to the tower finishes, which I needed to repair afterward. Additionally, the installation of the roof damaged the railing on the attic staircase landing, requiring further repairs.

Now that the roof panels are in place, my vision for the exterior attic walls is clearer. I chose a Tudor style with half-timber trim for these walls. To preserve the original brackets of the dollhouse, I installed the half-timber trim between them, allowing me to maintain both details.

For the tower room windows, I created a stained glass finish using the technique outlined in my Dollhouse Window Guide. As finials for the roof apexes, I used cameo jewelry pendants, painting them to match the dollhouse so they resemble carved wood. When attaching decorative pieces like these, it’s best to use hot melt glue if they are made of metal.
