In the past few days, I have been working on shingling my dollhouse. I started with the front wall gable, where I used a lighter purple for the half-timber trim on the side gables. For the front, I chose shingles in the same contrasting purple.
To do this, I made a template of the gable front and shingled it. Then, I attached the shingled and painted template to the wall. This method was easier because the dollhouse is small, making it difficult to cut all the angles for the shingles in such a tight space. The round window also posed a challenge, so it was much simpler to work with a template rather than trying to shingle around it directly on the wall.
I also added the exterior window trim to the template before gluing the entire finished piece onto the wall. I used binder clips to hold it in place until it dried. Once dry, I applied spackle to all the edges to cover any gaps.
I created templates for all the roof panels, which were numerous. After shingling and painting them off the dollhouse, I glued each corresponding template onto the roof.
Finally, I added roof trim painted in the same color as the shingles. I believe I achieved the look I wanted for this dollhouse. Although it was tedious work to apply all these finishes on such a small scale, the end result was worth it.
