The Beacon Hill Dollhouse Revisited Week 12

Finishing the Foyer

After installing the floor, you can add trim to the staircase in the foyer. Carefully examine the instruction photos to understand where to place the trim for the posts and bannisters. I used small wooden dowel caps as finials on my staircase post caps, which you can find in the craft store's wood section. Attach and glue the finials to the post caps before installing them on the dollhouse. Use masking tape to hold the finials in place while you paint or stain them. I also installed the staircase bannister.

Once I finished the staircase, I added door trim around the doorways. If your doors won't be hinged, you don't need to finish the inside edges of the door openings. I left the front door edges unfinished for now, but I will return to finish them later since this door will be hinged.

Next, I installed the baseboard trim in the foyer area. If you covered your floor like I did, run the baseboard trim around the bottom of the staircase as well. If you simply stained your dollhouse's original floors, this step is not necessary. I added a trim piece to the wall of the stairwell opening because raw wood will be visible where the upstairs wallpaper does not reach the foyer wallpaper. Paint or stain this trim piece to match the rest of your trim.

Front Wall

At this point, you can install the front wall, but remember to wallpaper the foyer area of that wall first. If you use a heavily printed paper, it should hide any wall corner joints.

Keep in Mind

Complete all touch-ups, baseboards, and ceiling trim now because access will be limited once the front wall is up. After installing it, you can finish the baseboards and ceiling trim on that wall. It may be a tight fit, but with clear access through the front door and bay openings, you'll be able to manage. A small handheld mirror can help with this process.
