Spotlight - Deana's Fairfield

So another little house has come to my attention and I’d like to share it with all of you. Deana Kelly of Bringhurst Indiana’s Fairfield. You know, I love to browse galleries of other peoples work and I have seen a lot of dollhouse but only a hand full of them ever catch my eye enough for me to say they are truly beautiful and this is one of them.

I have to admit that I’m very biased with the Fairfield by Greenleaf because I think it’s the best half scale house out there. Deana seems to agree and says “The thing I’ve always loved about the Fairfield is the layout of the house. It’s so much like a real house with it open on two sides the way it is. Some dollhouses, that are only open on the back, don’t seem as much like a real house. I like for my miniature projects to be as close to real life in miniature as possible.“ She certainly made her Fairfield realistic. The Fairfield has the most details I’ve ever seen in a half scale model and out shines a lot of her bigger sisters but Deana’s little mansion wins the prize.

Deana went all out with this little beauty. The first thing that caught my attention was the lovely color scheme. I love the aqua blue on this house. It just pops right out at you and it’s the perfect accent color to bring out all of this little houses lovely details. The beautiful relaxing earth tones just compliment the whole style of the house.

The shingle color matches the entire scheme and brings it all together. She also brought more of that nice shingle work to the bay roofs as well.

Deana added a lot of extras to her Fairfield. The exterior is brimming with unique details. First the little filigreed gingerbread she has placed on the upper attic windows. They are so delicate and lacy. She added more of this very detailed trimming around the tower turret and the top of the porch posts.

Deana used a brick look for her foundation and I love the way she brought that same brick work right on up to the porch steps.

This entire little house has been sided! I can only imagine the dedication and work that it must have taken to do that.

Deana also upgraded all of the porch parts with spindled posts and rails. It really adds to the depth of detail and I LOVE the detailed colors she chose to accent the rails.

This little house has been kit bashed as well and in a very tasteful manner that hasn’t taken away from the integrity of the house. She says about the bash “I didn’t actually have any intention of bashing the kit when my husband surprised me with it as a birthday present. It had been sitting in the wings while I was finishing up a few other projects. I loved the kit so much that I wanted to devote my undivided attention to it once I started it. Before I started the kit I had gone to an auction where they were offering all of the remaining stock from a dollhouse shop that had gone out of business. I managed to win the bid on two huge boxes of ½ inch scale components and furniture. Luckily there weren’t too many people at the auction that were interested in ½ inch scale. Since I had all of these components, I started thinking about how I could use some of them. That’s how I ended up with the idea to create the patio doors and the second floor balcony.”

And check out that balcony. I love the French patio doors she put in instead of the windows. She also made the porch wider and more uniform by closing off the kitchen door. Now she has all that extra space to put cute porch furniture on.

There isn’t a single unfinished area around this entire little jewel of a house. Deana has really taken great care to finish even the most miniscule of areas. If the outside is this good then the inside must be even better. Lets take the tour.

And better it is. Deana even knows who would inhabitat such a beauiful house. She says "I imagine a professional, unmarried, middle aged woman buying the house and decorating it in a more feminine style.”

It certainly turned out feminine indeed. Deana bricked the chimney to match her foundation in the same white tone and it came out beautiful.

She finished off the book case just perfectly, sparing no detail. She also upgraded all of the doors to working ones and they look so realistic.

She again upgraded the staircase to spindled posts and rails. It really adds that extra touch of detail to the house.

In this staircase hallway you can see the pretty French doors on the inside and they are superb. You will also notice something else about this staircase that kind of confused me at first but then I realized what it was. The staircase on the second floor is not originally in the house plans! Deana added this staircase so it would go up to the third floor. What a great idea! The best part is that you can see the details of its front through the French doors. Deana says “The third floor staircase just made sense to me since I didn’t want to use the third floor as an attic. I wanted to create a master suite/office up there for the professional woman so she would need easy access to it. The other upgrades to the windows, doors and staircases/railings I already knew that I wanted to do before I started the kit. It was just pure luck that the components I won at the auction included almost everything I needed to upgrade."

I love the different flooring through out the house to match each room. She chose really nice colors and textures. Everything compliments her wallpaper patterns which are all quite lovely.

The fireplaces also have the nicely painted white bricks and check out the stone hearths.

In the kitchen you can clearly see how closing off the kitchen door adds to the space in it. She has a full wrap around kitchen now with upper cabinets. Check out the magnet on the fridge. Its just adorable but I was stunned when I saw the tiny pantry door! Check that cutie out. Its identical to its life size counterpart!

Both bedrooms are decorated in a very elegant scheme as is the rest of the house. Deana says “I had already done a few Victorian houses in period style and wanted to create a victorian house in modern day times."

It must have been quite an experience to make this little home. Deana says “The most memorable part of the build had to be the fact that I had to do all the interior decorating as I went along, instead of decorating after the build was complete. This was my first ½ scale build and, luckily, I realized early on that I was not going to be able to complete the house in the detail that I wanted to unless I did it as I went along.”

All in all this has been the best Fairfield that I’ve seen. The attention to detail, the workmanship, the great kit bashing ideas has really made this little mansion a unique one of a kind home to be proud of. Great job Deana!
